Rochester man struck by vehicle, dies in Augusta crash

AUGUSTA, Maine - A 24-year-old Rochester, N.H., man walking on Route 3 early Wednesday morning died after he was struck by a vehicle. police said.
James Demeritt was wearing dark clothing and walking in the middle of the road at the time of the crash, according to Augusta police.
The driver of the 2006 van, Scott Glidden, 55, of Palermo, was unable to see Demeritt and police do not expect to file any charges.
Demeritt was struck a little after midnight. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An Augusta police lieutenant said Demeritt was on his way to meet someone prior to the crash, the Portland Press Herald reported on Thursday.
