BOSTON - Area music legend Ron Jones' said today he is hanging in there and feeling better after a head-on car crash Monday night on River Road in Lebanon, Maine, left him with serious injuries.

The crash occurred about 8:30 p.m. a half-mile south of Oak Hill Road in the area of 220 River Road, Maine State Trooper Michael Lane said on Wednesday.

Jones' Honda, which was headed toward Indian Shores, collided with a Jeep, which overturned, Lane said.

The Lebanon man driving the jeep was unhurt, Lane added.

Jones was transported to Portsmouth (NH) Regional Hospital after firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate him from his Honda Civic.

"They were pretty worried about me," Jones said today, adding it took about an hour and a half for them to painstakingly cut away sections of the car to get him out.

Early Tuesday morning Jones was transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston where he continues his recovery in a regular room after being discharged from the intensive care unit.

Both cars were towed from the scene, with Jones' Honda totaled and the Jeep with less damage.

Airbags in Jones' car deployed but not in the Jeep, Lane said.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts, he added.

Jones, who has been a rock 'n' roll staple of the northern Seacoast for decades, said he was unsure how much longer he'd be at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

He said he remembered nothing from the crash, but knew it was a bad one.

"They thought I was a goner there for a while," he said today.
