AUGUSTA, Maine - As the Chairman of the Aging Committee, Senator Susan Collins is cautioning seniors to be on guard against a new scheme that seeks to rob them of their hard-earned savings.
Con artists are calling Mainers claiming that their Social Security number has been compromised and used by someone else. In another version of this scam, Mainers are told that their Social Security number has been suspended and that there is a warrant for their arrest. Sometimes these scammers may pose as Social Security personnel by "spoofing" victims' caller ID to make it appear as though they are calling from a Social Security office.
Never give out personal information to an unsolicited caller. Anyone who receives such a call should immediately hang up. This scam can also be reported to the Aging Committee's Fraud Hotline at 1-855-303-9470.
