Smoke inhalation from house fire leaves one dead, one injured
Staff reports 6:54 a.m. .
WILTON - An investigation is under way into a Wilton house fire that left one dead and another in serious condition at a local hospital. Wilton firefighters got involved around 9:10 a.m. on Wednesday when they responded to Burns Hill Road after a caller reported their home was filling up with smoke. When the first responders arrived, they found a single-family home actively on fire and determined that two residents were still inside on the second floor. Firefighters entered the burning home and carried the two residents outside. The residents, an adult male and an adult female, were transported to Elliott Hospital due to significant smoke inhalation, according to safety officials. The adult female was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Her name is being withheld pending an autopsy scheduled at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Meanwhile, the adult male is currently in serious condition, and his name is being withheld pending the ongoing investigation. Investigators with the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office have responded to the scene and are leading the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire. While all aspects of the fire remain under investigation, at this time, investigators are looking into whether a power outage in the area at the time was a factor. The fire is not currently considered suspicious. Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is encouraged to contact the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office at (603) 223-4289 or fmo@dos.nh.gov.
