MILTON - SAU 64's Superintendent sought to reassure jittery parents in the wake of this week's Florida school shooting, saying on Friday the shooting, if anything, legitimizes his staff's unflinching commitment to make Milton schools the safest they can be.

"This (school safety) has been a huge key in our strategic planning area," SAU 64 Superintendent Earl Sussman said.

Sussman said that he and other school officials work continuously in conjunction with Milton Police to ensure that contingency plans - including active shooter incidents - receive the highest priority and our constantly being updated and improved.

SAU 64 comprises the Milton schools of Nute High and Middle School and Milton Elementary School.

While he wouldn't go into detail about the security upgrades and improvements that have been made over the years due to safety concerns, Sussman did say that students' safety is "paramount" and the focus on school safety is unwavering.

The Rochester Voice also made repeated attempts to contact SAD 60 and Rochester school officials, but phone calls on Friday were not returned.
