Talking turkey, study finds Northern New England safest place for Thanksgiving

A new study has found that when it comes to the Thanksgiving holiday, there's no place as safe as New England to spend it.

Vermont came out on top, followed closely by Maine and New Hampshire.

Surprisingly, New York, which had some of the highest numbers for hospitalizations and deaths during the first surge in May, came in fourth.

The study by the finance website WalletHub compared the 50 states across 10 key metrics to see which provide the safest conditions for Turkey day. Our data set includes metrics examining how the state is handling the COVID-19 pandemic, such as positive tests and deaths per capita in the past week, as well as other indicators of general safety like the crime rate and the average number of DUI-related fatalities in November.

Thanksgiving Safety in New Hampshire (1=Safest; 25=Avg.):

  • 8th - COVID-19 Positive Tests in the Past Week per Capita
  • 3rd - COVID-19 Hospitalization Rate This Week
  • 17th - Share of Multigenerational Households
  • 11th - Share of Offline Homes
  • 2nd - Crime Rate
