MANCHESTER - The Rochester Voice won two awards at the New Hampshire Press Association's 2021 Excellence in Journalism Contest Awards Banquet held at St. Anselm College on Thursday.
The Voice took first-place honors in editorial writing based on its submission of four articles, including three involving Rochester city government.
One dated Feb. 16 chastised a resolution over redistricting approved as an agenda item that wasted too much of valuable council time with highly partisan bickering.
A second entry dated April 18 reflected on Gov. Chris Sununu's failure to answer a Covid-related question as the pandemic eased. The question asked by The Voice was: "If you knew then what you know now, would you do anything differently?"
Another dated May 4 urged all City Councilors to offer their phone numbers on the city's website to allow unfettered access to their constituents.
The final entry dated Nov. 1 urged the city to do due diligence before hiring a community health coordinator.
The Rochester Voice also won a second-place in spot news reporting for its Jan. 9 article about a Lafayette Street apartment building fire that left 12 homeless.
"The Rochester Voice is delighted to accept these awards that we have worked hard to achieve," said Martha Soto Galicia, president of The Voice. "After winning Rochester Business of the Year in 2021 from the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce in November, this has indeed been a banner year for The Rochester Voice."
"I was thrilled when I heard my name called for winning first place in editorial writing," said Harrison Thorp, editor of The Voice. "It is a fabulous honor, up there with the biggest."
