DOVER - A transient with ties to Rochester was sentenced to eight to 16 years in state prison on Monday after pleading guilty to dispensing the deadly narcotic fentanyl to a Rochester man in June.

Ryan P. Kirk, 27, was arrested in October after an investigation led to his possible involvement. He was captured on Sheridan Avenue after a short footchase with city police.

The charges spawned from an investigation into the circumstances of an overdose that occurred on June 24 at the Northgate Apartment complex on Farmington Road in Rochester. During the investigation it was determined that the death occurred from a lethal dose of fentanyl, and it was alleged that Kirk supplied the drug to the victim.

A warrant was issued Sept 28, with Rochester police actively seeking Kirk.

On Oct. 9 police received information from the public about some drug dealing in the city. Later in the day officers located Kirk coming out of a home on Charles Street where an attempt to take him into custody failed when he ran away from the scene.

However, a short foot pursuit onto Sheridan Avenue yielded Kirk's apprehension.

Kirk was indicted on the charges in November.

If Kirk had been found guilty at trial, he could have faced life in prison.
