ROCHESTER - Frisbie Memorial Hospital is now using low-dose CT scanning as a follow-up tool for screening colorectal cancer. This procedure, known as virtual colonoscopy, does not replace the effective and most reliable colorectal cancer screening tool, which is the colonoscopy, but rather it is utilized as a means to obtain additional images of the colon and rectum.

Colonoscopy is available at Frisbie Memorial Hospital and is performed by the gastroenterologists of Atlantic Digestive Specialists and by the general surgeons at Surgical Associates of Rochester. Colorectal cancer often can be prevented. Screening helps find precancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. According to the American Cancer Society colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths nationwide.
