In James Dobson's last Vlog he spoke philosophically of the joys of seeing the world go by at 13 mph.
"If you slow it down a little bit at about 13 mph on a bicycle or even if you're walking you can take so much more in and it gives you a better perspective than driving your car and racing by everything," he said before pausing a bit and adding, "And that's what we do in life, we race by things and we never stop to look and help somebody or do something for somebody else."
Dobson, of Dover, who was riding across America on a recumbent bicycle to raise money for Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, died Tuesday in a tragic accident in Mississippi, his 42nd day on the road
Dobson, 32, who wanted to raise $10,000 to help children fighting cancer, achieved his objective on Wednesday, a day after he died.
According to local paper the Hattiesburg American, the accident occurred in Lamar County a little before 1 p.m. on Tuesday when Dobson was struck by a 2016 Dodge Challenger. Both the Dodge and Dobson were westbound on U.S. Route 98.
Police said the driver of the Dodge was unable to avoid hitting Dobson. No charges have been filed.
Dr. Keith Loud, physician-in-chief at Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, issued a statement about Dobson's death Wednesday.
"We here at CHaD are shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of James Dobson. I did not have the pleasure of meeting James, but as an avid cyclist myself, I am moved by not only the dedication but the courage it took to ride across the country in an effort to give back," Loud wrote. "We express our deepest condolences to his friends and family."
Some $10,000 was raised on Dobson's "Cycling for kids with Cancer" Gofundme page on Wednesday alone as the tragic news spread. Today the total is more than $14,000.
