WASHINGTON - If you've been to Washington but haven't been to the Dubliner, have you really been to DC?

No.

The Dubliner is an authentic Irish pub on Capitol Hill that delivers great food at a modest price.

What's really special about the place, however, is its convivial atmosphere where everyone from waitstaff to bartenders to management treat customers new and old with true Irish hospitality.

While in Washington this week I found myself eating nothing but salads, including what the Dubliner calls its Iceberg salad ($11), a delightfully fresh and inviting plate, to be sure, as they say in Ireland.

It comprises tomato, crinkled bacon on a bed of crispy iceberg lettuce that is lightly dressed with buttermilk ranch.

My meal came out in no time and presented beautifully.

You can add chicken, shrimp or salmon for a little extra.

If you want something that will really stick to your ribs try their Guinness Burger ($18), which comes with chopped onion, Guinness marinade, potato boxty, an Irish pancake native to the northern midlands; trinity cheese sauce and onion straws, similar to onion rings.

The Dubliner is located a minute's walk from Union Station in the same building as the Phoenix Park Hotel.
