BRENTWOOD - Stephen J. Arkell, 48 of 6 Gove Road Brentwood, died on May 12, 2014, of fatal gunshot wounds while on duty as a Brentwood Police Officer.

He was born in Stamford, Conn. on November 18, 1965, the son of Marion and Tom Arkell. He and his family moved to Brentwood in 1971. Steve attended Swasey School in Brentwood and Exeter Junior High and Senior High School. After earning a bachelor's degree from UNH in 1988 he embarked on a career as a builder. Steve was a well-respected coach in soccer, lacrosse, and baseball for his two daughters and many other local youths. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, boater and general outdoorsman.

Steve began his police career in 1999 with the Brentwood Police Department and was also the animal control officer for his hometown. He was a dedicated husband, father and tireless community volunteer.

Steve is survived by his wife of 21 years, Heather (Piper) Arkell; daughters, Kimberly and Lauren; parents, Marion and Tom Arkell of Brentwood; brother, Jeff and wife Robin of Brentwood; brother David of Dover, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brentwood Police Association in memory of Officer Steve Arkell.
