Area Memorial Day observances set for Sunday, Monday

Memorial Day observances will be held throughout the Greater Rochester area over the long weekend, including here in Rochester as well as Milton, Farmington and Lebanon, Maine.

In Rochester the parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Holy Rosary Church on North Main Street before proceeding to the North Main Street bridge for a ceremony honoring sailors lost at sea.

It will then continue on to the Commons where the bulk of the observance will be held.

The Rochester parade and ceremony is organized by the Sons of American Legion, Post #7, and will also include the Spaulding High School marching band and Spaulding ROTC.

Farmington's observance on Sunday will be highlighted by the dedication of the recently rebuilt Main Street bridge in the memory of Army Major John Lawrence, a Farmington man who lost his life in fighting during the Vietnam War.

The parade begins at the Farmington Cemetery at 1 p.m., with readings and ceremonies commemorating the sacrifice of servicemen and women who didn't return from the battlefield. From there the parade will proceed to the bridge for the official dedication to Lawrence.

Friends of Farmington is hosting a Decorate Your Wheels contest, plus there will also be Shriners and antique cars, military vehicles, and local Scouts.

The Milton Memorial Day Parade is set for Monday at 10 a.m. It will form at the American Legion Hall on Steeple Street and proceed northerly onto White Mountain Highway to the Garage Way bridge for a brief ceremony honoring Navy war dead. The parade will then proceed to the Dollar General parking lot where it will reverse direction and return to the Milton Veterans Memorial Park for the bulk of the service.

State Rep. Bob Graham will be the main speaker for the event. Also a Nute High School student will read the Gettysburg Address.

Refreshments will be served to children after the paradel.

Meanwhile, in Lebanon, Maine, a Memorial Day Ceremony will take place on Monday at 11 a.m. at Town Offices on Upper Guinea Road.
