It’s not something I’d normally write a column about, but here’s some colonoscopy news you might be interested in.
Everyone knows that the prep is the worst part of it, not the procedure.
In the past when I’ve gotten one, you had to drink like a gallon of nauseating liquid in a couple of hours, which was pure torture.
But earlier this week, instead of a gallon of colon cleaning prep liquid, it was just two tiny five-ounce bottles of just mildly obnoxious cranberry-flavored yuckiness, but the point is five ounces of yuckiness is far superior to 64 ounces, trust me.
This should be just one more reason not to be fearful of getting the procedure dreaded by so many folks, both men and women.
It’s the best way to spot the early stages of colon cancer, which can usually be cured if you nip the polyps in the bud, so to speak.
And overall, serious complications arise in only about two to three per 1,000.
One other thing that was different this time. Unlike before i got to take home some pictures for the family photo album!
Here are some other guidelines to check out, before you contact your physician to schedule one.
Starting Age: Begin regular screening at age 45 for both men and women.
Frequency: A standard screening colonoscopy is typically repeated every 10 years if results are normal.
Stopping Age: Routine screening is generally recommended until age 75.
