ROCHESTER - Barbara Jane Winkley Scott died on Aug. 23, 2024, after a long illness. Her final moments were spent peacefully in her home in Rochester, surrounded by family.
Born and raised in Rochester, Barbara was a graduate of Spalding High School and of the Concord School of Nursing. She was also an alumnus of the University of New Hampshire where she received her bachelor's and her master's in psychology.
As a nurse she was highly skilled working primarily in the operating room. After her career in Nursing, Barbara became an active member of the Rochester Court Drug Diversion Program. Her commitment to her community was always most important to her. This commitment led her to join the Board of Directors of the Gafney Home for the Aged and the Frisbie Memorial Hospital. She was a talented writer, orator, and singer and a loving and caring wife and mother. She had a long and fruitful life caring for others and was close with many friends and colleges in the community. Her impact on those that knew her was immense and she dealt with the challenges she faced later in life with humor, dignity and courage.
She was also a lifelong member of Saint Mary's Catholic Parish of Rochester, and her faith sustained her through many challenges.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years James Edward Scott Jr, her sister Marjorie Nesbit of Stuart, Fla., her son and daughter in law Harry and Jean Scott of Virginia, her grandson Brendan James Winkley Scott of Portland, Maine, and a special Niece and Nephew Pam and Dan Gelinas of Rochester.
