RPL Recommends Animated Videos

We have a new way of recommending book, dvd and audiobook titles! Main Desk Librarian (and syndicated cartoonist), Stephanie, and Main Desk Librarians, Karyl and Nick, have created a series of animated videos recommending books and DVDs and other items. See them on our Facebook and Instagram accounts.

On Display

Beat the heat with these Audiobook chillers! Going on a road trip or just hanging around the house this summer, you can stop by and pick out a thriller that will make any highway driving or house cleaning project a lot more riveting and intense! Some of our favorites include :

Have You Seen Me by Kate White

Never Let Me Go by Chevy Stevens

Under My Skin by Lisa Unger

The Silent Patient by Alex Michalides

Returns

Returned items will no longer be quarantined. You can continue to put your returned books and magazines in the drive-up drop box and DVDS and audiobooks in the drop box next to the building by the Children's Room entrance. You may also bring your returns inside and place them in the Main Desk and Children's drop slots if you are here to browse.

Book Review

Main Desk Librarian, Amy, shares a favorite book, Ladies of the Secret Circus by Constance Sayers. "I'm a sucker for a good circus book. This book had me on the edge of my seat the whole time! There are so many nuggets and twists that I couldn't get enough. It takes place during the Jazz Age in Paris and in modern day America with multiple generations of women plagued by mysterious tragedies. It is a mystery and a thriller with magic, hell, love, art, and family. I don't know how the author fit it all in one book! Highly recommended!"

Adult Summer Reading

Read anything you like and then track your reading using the Beanstack app (or website). All you have to do is keep track of how many minutes you've read (or paper logs are available in the Library and on our website). The Beanstack app has a built-in stopwatch, but you can also use any form of timekeeping and then enter that number of minutes into your Beanstack account. In the app you will win badges, prizes, and raffle tickets as you go. Some examples of prizes include Friends of the Library tote bags, protective book sleeves, a super soft and cozy reading cushion, and the grand raffle prize of a Samsung tablet (compatible with both Overdrive/Libby and hoopla).

Children's Room

StoryWalk®: The Children's room will host the final StoryWalk® of the summer series on Tuesday July 27th. The StoryWalk® will be set up on a portion of the Pickering Ponds trail system in Gonic, 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. & 5:00 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. The library reminds families that Pickering Ponds is a great outdoor space to bring a picnic and enjoy one of Rochester's Recreation areas.

Library staff will have a greeter at the gate to direct families to the walk. Walking paths are accessible for strollers with large sturdy wheels. Expect the approximate walking distance will be .75 mile. Don't forget your bug spray.

StoryWalk provides an opportunity for physical activity while nurturing a child's interest in books. Pages from a children's book are posted on signs and placed along a walking trail. As you move along the trail, you are directed to the next page in the story.

The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk is a registered service mark owned by Ferguson.

Tails & Tales Summer Reading: We are using Beanstack for logging completed books online, and, we are counting minutes, this year, instead of books. Kids can earn weekly badges online, and a completion prize will be awarded to kids who read 500 minutes or more. The program will end on Friday, August 6th.

Children can drop by for crafts. Older children may attend independently, but younger children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult.

Drop-in Story Times: We will offer drop-in story times geared for children age 2 through 6, but all families are welcome! Bring a blanket and meet on the lawn.
