BERWICK, Maine - A coordinated effort between local and state police resulted in the arrest of a Berwick couple in what appears to be a large-scale burglary ring operating in southwest York County.

The robberies took place in Lebanon, Berwick, North Berwick and South Berwick since mid-May and involved the theft of firearms, electronic equipment, even booze.

Berwick Police on Tuesday arrested Adam Brake, 28, and Sabrina Goodrich, 20, of Berwick for Class "B" Burglary.

Police say the pair, who committed the burglaries while their four-year-old son and infant daughter accompanied them in the car, are linked to more than a dozen daytime residential burglaries in southern Maine.

Investigators got their first break when they learned a silver Jeep Grand Cherokee had been seen in the area or fleeing the scene of several of the burglaries.

While conducting a neighborhood canvas on Tuesday afternoon shortly after a reported burglary, Berwick Police Officer Nicholas Higgins noticed a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description on Little River Road in Berwick. Officer Higgins conducted a traffic stop and requested the assistance of Detective Ron Lund.

At the time of the traffic stop, the North Berwick Police Department had been investigating two residential burglaries in the same area of Little River Road. A witness reported suspicious activity of someone throwing some items off of the Little River bridge on Diamond Hill Road in Berwick. Sergeant Steven Shisler located a gun safe and Sentry fire safe and other documents which had been linked to one of the North Berwick burglaries.

Lund then spoke with Brake and Goodrich and obtained confessions from both suspects. Brake was immediately taken into custody and charged with burglary as he is currently on US Federal Probation for trafficking in narcotics. Goodrich was also taken into custody and charged with burglary.

Investigators learned that Brake and Goodrich were committing the alleged burglaries to support an addiction to heroin. They also learned that the pair had their four-year-old son and eight-month old daughter in the vehicle with them during most of the burglaries. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services Child Protection Unit assisted with the investigation and is working with both families concerning welfare of the children.

The pair committed more than a dozen burglaries and stole jewelry, electronics, computers, televisions, currency and over 23 firearms. The property is valued at more than $50,000. Some of the stolen property and firearms was recovered.

Brake was arraigned Wednesday at Springvale District Court where his bail was set at $25,000. A warrant issued by US Probation for Probation Violation includes an additional $25,000 bail. Brake is currently being held at the York County Jail.

Goodrich was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled to appear at York County Superior Court next month.

Lund indicated that the investigation is still ongoing and that other suspects have been identified and future arrests are expected. He also expressed his gratitude for the cooperation of all the law enforcement agencies and the man hours dedicated to solving these crimes.

Berwick Police Chief Timothy Towne added, "Fourteen families have been victimized due to the heroin epidemic. We hope that all the families who have had their homes invaded sleep better knowing that arrests have been made and a considerable amount of property has been recovered."
