ROCHESTER - An elderly Florida woman was charged with DWI on Monday after police say she crashed into a utility pole on Little Falls Bridge Road, closing the busy street for several hours.

The incident began with a call to police around 4 p.m. notifying them of a vehicle driving on two flat tires. Minutes later it was reported the same vehicle had stuck a utility pole on Little Falls Bridge Road.

Doris Hersey, age 79, of Boynton Beach, was charged with a DWI, a Class B misdemeanor.

Police say she was driving a Mercury Grand Marquis west on Little Falls Bridge Road when she left the roadway and sheared off the utility pole. The vehicle sustained heavy front end damage and was towed from the scene.

The Mercury took heavy front-end damage.

Rochester Fire was at the scene as the pole was in the roadway blocking traffic. The road remained closed for several hours.

Hersey was transported to Frisbie Hospital by Frisbie EMS with what were described as nonlife threatening injuries.

She was released on personal recognizance bail with a September arraignment in Rochester District Court.
