LEBANON - Christine Torno, fresh off a stunning landslide victory in Tuesday's race for Lebanon selectman, took time out on Wednesday to thank the nearly 600 town residents who voted for her on Tuesday, while former selectmen chair Ben Thompson pressed those who supported him to stay vigilant and educated on the issues.

"Thank you all for your support," Torno said on her Facebook page. "As a selectman I will do the best I can for The Town."

Torno racked up 585 votes in Tuesday's voting, while Thompson, the incumbent, mustered just 235, followed by political newcomer Jennie McComish with 162.

Thompson, who was often at odds on issues with fellow selectmen Royce Heath and Paul Nadeau, said in an email to The Lebanon Voice on Wednesday that those who have worked to hold town leaders accountable should continue the fight.

Thompson's statement reads in full.

"I take a moment to congratulate all the candidates who won seats in yesterday's elections. You have your work cut out for you within the next five weeks.

"I personally thank the citizens of Lebanon and the many employees who have reached out to me within the past several hours with their support. It has been an honor to serve and work with you.

"For those who have voiced concern as to where we are now headed, Lebanon will continue. How it will continue is the question. It is up to us to be vigilant and become better educated. Educate yourselves of your rights, and hold our elected officials responsible to do what is best for our community.

"Many voices become one large voice when used in unison. Most importantly, enjoy your loved ones and your life. I am."

Among the challenges the new board faces is the resubmission of town budges for Fire and EMS, CEO and Transfer Station that were all rejected by voters, presumably for their respective increases.

The new Board of Selectmen will have its first meeting today at 6 p.m. The only agenda item furnished on a town bulletin sent on Wednesday was "Introductions."

Meanwhile, a post Wednesday on Tom Torno for Road Commissioner's Facebook page exulted in his narrow win over Tom Boucher, 364-340.

"Tom Torno thanks you all for your support. He has won!! Tom would like to thank the other candidates also. Larry is looking down on you tonight, Tom, and is very proud of you!"

Tom's father, former road commissioner Larry Torno, died last year of an inoperable form of cancer.

It is unclear whether Tom Torno will attend tonight's meeting.

One of the first announcements is expected to be the naming of a new board chair.

In the recent past it has always been the selectman who has served the longest.
