ROCHESTER - A couple of weeks ago the Rochester Walmart had hundreds of air conditioners and fans on its shelves.

Today it has just a few fans.

"We've got no ACs, just a couple of box fans," said a Walmart manager today.

The manager, who did not want to give his name, said air conditioners had been flying off the shelves the past few weeks, along with fans, water, Gatorade and pools, basically anything to stay cool in this oppressive heat and humidity.

Over at Lowe's Home Improvement, an employee in the appliance center said AC units were selling fast as well, while at Milton Hardware AC unit gaskets were in high demand over the weekend, store personnel said.

But believe it or not, the real heat wave - defined by three consecutive days of 90-degree weather - doesn't even take hold till Tuesday, when highs in the mid-90s are expected, followed by 92 on the Fourth of July and 94 on Thursday.

Tuesday, when Rochester will host its Night Before the Fourth celebration at the Community Center and Spaulding Athletic Fields, could be one of the hottest days of the year thus far with Accuweather Real Feel temperature expected to be around 102 degrees at 3 p.m.

And when the fireworks are going off around 9 p.m. it will only have dropped to 82.

Lows through Thursday will be either side of 70 degrees.

Meanwhile, the city announced today it will be opening the city Library and City Hall during the heat wave as temporary cooling centers.

Rochester Fire Chief Mark Klose told The Rochester Voice around 10 a.m. that the library will be available during normal business hours and City Hall will be open till 9 p.m., thus allowing residents some heat relief during the hottest times of the day.

At the City Hall folks can cool off in the City Council chambers, Klose noted.
