AUGUSTA, Maine - Central Maine Power on Tuesday sent out information to customers reminding them there are several assistance programs to help customers who are behind in paying their electric bills. Customers can contact CMP to learn about the sources of assistance they may be eligible for, and to discuss affordable payment arrangements.

"We want to help customers access any assistance they may qualify for if they are behind in their bills. We can look at their accounts, understand their needs and means, and point them toward programs that may support them," said Linda Ball, vice president, Customer Service at CMP. "We strongly encourage any customer who is struggling to pay their electricity bill to talk to us about their options."

Assistance available to customers includes:

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP): Provides a lump sum bill credit to qualified customers; eligibility guidelines apply. CMP can help customers determine if they're qualified.

Emergency Rental Assistance: Renters may be eligible for assistance through this Maine State Housing Authority program. Administered through local CAP agencies, there is funding available to assist with rent and utility payments for customers who have been impacted by COVID-19.

Electricity Lifeline Program (ELP): Offers qualified customers a lump sum credit on their electric bill. This credit is based on household income and estimated electricity usage.

Arrears Management Program: LIHEAP-eligible customers may also be eligible for the Arrears Management Program (AMP), which reduces past due balances through bill credits when current bills are paid on time.

Customers may also discuss how to enter into an affordable payment arrangement to address overdue bills and manage payments going forward.
