SANFORD - A Sanford man has been indicted in the brutal assault of his infant twins in May.

Anthony Carpinelli, 21, of 25-C Bates Street, was formally charged with two counts each of aggravated assault, assault on a child under the age of 6 and child neglect domestic violence, all felonies.

Carpinelli was charged on May 5 after a three-day investigation by Sanford Police.

The probe began after detectives from the Sanford Police Department learned that the twins had been taken to Southern Maine Health Care Emergency Department with serious injuries due to head trauma.

The infants were transported to Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, one with serious injuries, the other with critical injuries.

Police say Carpinelli, the biological father of the twins, was the caretaker of the infants when their injuries were sustained and that they were inflicted intentionally.

Carpinelli is being held at the York County Jail.

The grand jury indictments were handed down Aug. 5.

An indictment is not an indication of guilt, only that enough evidence has been shown to warrant a trial.
