GEORGETOWN, S.C. - David Allen Bertrand, Sr., 83, died peacefully April 16, 2021, at his home in Georgetown. He was born May 27, 1937 to Alfred Bertrand Sr. and Lillian Gale Bertrand in Providence, R.I.
He attended school in Dover, N.H., and while in high school joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve. After graduation he joined the United States Air Force and served in Savannah, Ga., Spain and North Africa. After the service he worked as a machinist at Kidder Press and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he retired as a Nuclear Inspector. David went back to work for the Dover Police Department on the Ambulance Corps and as a Parking Attendant.
He loved coaching his son David and teammates in Little League & Babe Ruth Baseball and Pee Wee Football and served as President of Dover Minor League and Babe Ruth Baseball. He served for the City of Dover on the Zoning Board of Adjustment and on the Board of Directors for Administrative Code. He volunteered for the Dover Red Cross and served on the Board of Directors and for the Dover Historical Society.
He is a Life Member and Past Officer of the Dover Elks and a past member of the Dover Masonic Lodge No. 5. In Georgetown, he was a member and historian for the American Legion #114 and Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church where he served as an usher and on the Mission Team and Historical Cemetery Committee. David truly enjoyed the countless volunteer hours he spent at The Georgetown Historical Museum.
David loved traveling, woodworking and bird watching and sharing his wooden bird houses and whirligigs throughout the community.
He is survived by his wife Jacqueline Smith Bertrand and children Diana Bertrand Wellman (Dr. William), June Bertrand Sawyer (Joe Brown), Raymond Smith (Denise), Cynthia Smith Camara (Brian) and Ronald Smith (Lori), his sister Gale Joyal (Robert), sisters-in-law Lucette Bertrand, Roberta Garneau, Sandy Picott, Claire Morgan and mother of his children Sandra Binette. He leaves behind his blended family of 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his son David Allen Bertrand Jr, his parents Alfred Sr. & Lillian Bertrand, his brothers Alfred Jr. (wife Jean), Robert and James Bertrand (wife Lee.)
