BERWICK - Berwick Police today said they and Maine State Police continue to work several leads following the theft of a .45 caliber handgun from a Lebanon residence earlier this month.

The theft was reported on Aug. 12, and a 15-year-old Berwick resident was arrested on Aug. 18, but police have been unable to recover the handgun.

Berwick Police Detective Ron Lund said today he couldn't comment on whether the Berwick teen is cooperating, but did say he and Maine State Police Trooper John Darcy are both working several leads.

Lund acknowledged the stolen firearm may possibly have already been fenced, but added police are doing everything possible to get it off the street.

"Whenever a stolen handgun is in the wrong hands gives lawmen grave concerns," Lund said. "We want to get it back to the rightful owner and not have it used against us or other individuals."

Lund said the Kimber Custom Crimson Carry II .45 had been properly stored when it was stolen from the Lebanon residence, and that the teen arrested was known to the family who lived there.

He said police have conducted interviews with several people other than the Berwick teen in an attempt to gather information regarding the gun's whereabouts.

Meanwhile, the juvenile was taken to the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland. Due to the fact he is a juvenile, his name was not released.

Tipsters can contact Maine State Police Trooper John Darcy at 207-657-3030 or Berwick Detective Ron Lund at 207-698-1136 if you have information pertaining to this case.
