Donald Trump has led us to four years of mayhem

To the editor:
I would like to invite my fellow citizens to join me in contemplating the chaotic state of our nation after almost four years of political mayhem by Donald Trump and his Republican supporters in Congress. Never have the actions of one man and his political party been so detrimental to our democratic institutions, so harmful to our international relations, so divisive of the body politic, so disruptive to our social stability and so contemptuous of our Constitutional system of checks and balances. In short, Donald Trump is an embarrassment, if not a threat, to our democracy and its rule of law. He is a constant reminder that America has lost its way.
Trump's failures in leadership and judgment during the pandemic have shown us just how dangerous he really is. His glaring incompetence, his willful negligence and his absurd macho-man attitude regarding face masks have led to tens of thousands of coronavirus deaths and trillions of dollars in economic losses. In the words of the New England Journal of Medicine, Trump and the other leaders of this nation have "taken a crisis and turned it into a tragedy."
But Trump's most fundamental and unforgivable sin has been his non-stop, gratuitous lying about anything and everything in an effort to mislead the American people. Indeed, his entire presidency has been built upon a wobbly foundation of lies and deceit. This is abundantly evidenced by the astounding 20,000 false and misleading statements documented to have been made by Trump during his presidency.
Trump's profound mendacity is the ultimate source of all the dysfunction and disarray that now pervades our federal government. His pathological disregard for honesty and decency makes him unfit to hold any office of public trust, least of all the presidency of the United States.
The bottom line is that Donald Trump has demonstrated again and again that he has absolutely no qualms about lying to the American people, subverting our democracy, endangering our national security and jeopardizing our public health for his own ends. So the correct choice in the coming election should be clear to all those voters who value truth, honesty and the integrity of our democratic institutions.
It was noted some two thousand years ago that "the truth shall set you free." And so it is that the truth will free our nation from the tragedy of Trump. I encourage everyone, regardless of political persuasion, to vote for truth and freedom.
