STRAFFORD - Douglas Donald Hume, 68, passed away peacefully at home in Strafford, NH with his family by his side on February 11, 2026. Doug was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, teacher, coach, and bass fisherman.

He was born to John (Jack) and Norma Hume of Malden, MA where he went to school and excelled in hockey. He attended the University of Massachusetts Lowell and earned an undergraduate degree in geology. He became a science teacher at Hillsboro-Deering High School in Hillsboro, NH where he met his wife Susan in 1980. Though he never chose to leave the classroom, he went on to earn his Master's Degree in Education Administration from Keene State College.

Douglas and Susan, along with their daughter Kolby, were long-time residents of Henniker, NH. Together, Doug, Sue, and Kolby enjoyed summers on the boat, long family walks, pizza picnics, and nights in the kitchen or on the deck with friends. Doug ended his teaching career at John Stark Regional High School in Weare, NH among beloved colleagues and students. Through his leadership and advocacy, the NHIAA established Bass Fishing as a varsity sport in the state of New Hampshire.

Despite his cool demeanor, Doug was an expert at many things. He was notorious for finding the "secret spot" to catch the biggest bass in any given lake across the state. He especially loved fishing tournaments on Squam. He loved beating his friends at cribbage and enjoyed regular games with his "poker boys."

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Norma. He is survived by his wife Susan and daughter Kolby, his son-in-law, Ryan, and granddaughter, Joslin. He also leaves his sister Jean, brother Michael, and their families. Doug was deeply grateful for his friends, who felt so much like family.
