Dr. Eberhard Hoene ... enjoyed mushroom hunting at 74

SOMERSWORTH - Dr. Eberhard Rudolf Wilhelm Hoene MD was born May 9, 1949 in Frankfurt, Germany to Dr. Rudolf Hoene MD, PhD and Ursula Reich Hoene. Eberhard died peacefully at home in Somersworth on Feb. 20, 2024.

The Hoene family immigrated from Germany to Montreal, Canada, followed by immigration to the United States in 1955. The growing family lived in Connecticut, West Virginia, Virginia and found their permanent home in Durham. Only speaking German at home, the Hoene family was considered an unusual addition in each community, they were always well respected due to their strict family traditions and work ethics. Eberhard excelled at Oyster River Schools, graduating High School from Phillips Exeter Academy, followed by Dartmouth College with a double major in Russian Studies and Pre-Med. He graduated from the University of Graz, Austria, with his MD, followed by Internships and Residencies with a specialty as a Urological Surgeon.

His professional career led him to Hannover, Germany where he had the honor of developing a patent on a Ureteral Stent. Unfortunately, health issues prevented him from continuing in his specialty and his work concentrated in the development of information and telecommunication systems.

Eberhard, from an early age, was extremely well read, intelligent, multilingual and a friend to all. He was always happy to lend a helping hand whether it was building, cooking, writing or organizing. His family and friendships spanned continents. He conversed easily over many time zones and found ethical people with honesty, integrity, and acute analytical skills fascinating.

His library burst with historical writings but he also became a visionary through his love of science fiction. Through school he was not only a competitive swimmer but also talented in fencing and playing the violin. Eb enjoyed each day with walks outside and in earlier years spent summers with his family building lakeside cabins in the Laurentians of Quebec, and the mountains of Vermont. He was known far and wide for his unique ability to forage and cook edible mushrooms and construct round log towers for our chilly winters. Eb was a magnet for any family pet, they all loved him.

Eberhard was predeceased by his youngest brother Burkard and his parents Rudolf and Ursula. He is survived by his beloved siblings: Dr. Barbara Hoene of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, Christina Hoene Potter and husband David of Durham, NH., E. Max Hoene and wife Candance of Moultonborough, NH and Austin, TX. and his loving son Clemens Busse Peterhänsel, wife Claudia and granddaughter Flora of Aschersleben, Germany. Eberhard also enjoyed his aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He loved nothing better than to hear the exciting news of the "younger generations" and reminisc about how everyone got to where they were. Eberhard had a lifelong respect and memory of our ancestors that had paved our ways as our families grew over the continents. One would be remiss not to mention his most passionate mission in later years was to fly the banner, via social media, of justice, honour and equal rights to all, after all, he was so proud that his ancestors were Crusaders and Teutonic Knights and that blood ran deeply through him. The Hoene Family Crest states "To your friends your hand, to your family your heart, to your adversaries your brow." Eberhard gave these words life and honored them.
