LEBANON - A serious crash at the intersection of Route 202 and Center and Long Swamp roads on Tuesday was the result of the driver falling asleep at the wheel, Maine State Police say.

According to Lebanon Fire and EMS, a witness on scene said the vehicle swerved multiple times before eventually driving off the road and into trees.

An elderly couple was found inside the vehicle. Both Lebanon Ambulances were used to transport the two, who both suffered significant injuries, according to Lebanon Fire and EMS.

One of the occupants inside the vehicle was able to activate a medical alert pendant which transmitted medical information to dispatch, a post on the department's Facebook page noted.

The male driver fell asleep at the wheel, Maine State Trooper Michael Lane said on Friday, adding there were no signs of impairment or intoxication.

The names of the injured couple and their medical status have not been released due to privacy laws.
