EAST ROCHESTER - A 7-year-old East Rochester youngster suffered a broken wrist when his bike collided with a car Wednesday evening.

The accident occurred in the area of 24 Mill St. around 8:20 p.m. when police say the young boy was riding his bike westbound on the sidewalk on the north side of the street as Tricia Smith, 32 of Rochester, was traveling westbound on Mill St.

The juvenile was hidden behind two parked vehicles that were on the north side of the street and entered the roadway from in front of the parked vehicles, colliding with Smith, who was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision, police said.

The 1998 Mercury Sable she was operating sustained minor damage, while the boy's bicycle sustained a bent rim.

He was transported to Frisbie Memorial Hospital with a suspected wrist fracture and minor abrasions. He was not wearing a helmet at the time.

This collision was determined to be a low-speed collision and no charges will be filed due to the facts of the case. There was no indication of drugs or alcohol being involved in this collision and Smith cooperated completely with the investigation, according to police.

In a press release sent Wednesday night the Rochester Police Department took the opportunity to remind parents and caregivers that children under the age of 16 years are required to wear a bicycle helmet when riding a bike on public property.
