ROCHESTER - An East Rochester motorcyclist was seriously injured on Wednesday when his Harley Davidson crashed on Old Dover Road.

The crash occurred around 4 p.m. near the Spaulding Exit 11 off-ramp when police Paul Mulcahy, 62, was riding his Harley Davidson Touring Motorcycle south, attempted to pass another vehicle at the off ramp and left the roadway.

Mulcahy's bike then continued on the shoulder until he struck a mailbox then a utility pole. Mulcahy was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with what were described as serious injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

The accident resulted in the closure of Old Dover Rd for about an hour. The investigation remains open at this time. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Officer Plumb of the Rochester Police Department at 603-330-7128.

The Rochester Police Department would like to remind motorists that using a DOT-compliant motorcycle helmet when riding can greatly reduce the chances of a serious injury or fatality in the event of an accident. Police urge motorcyclists to ride responsibly, read the road ahead and wear proper safety equipment.
