ROCHESTER - Edwin F. Mitchell, Jr., 90, died peacefully September 17, 2021, at Carriage Hill Assisted Living, Madbury. Born July 29, 1931 in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Edwin Mitchell and Dorothy (Irish) Mitchell.

Edwin graduated from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1949. Below his high school yearbook photo is written "speech is silver, but silence is golden", perfectly describing how he was to live his life; a man of few words, but the words he spoke always had meaning. Following graduation, he served with the Army as a Repeaterman in Korea during the Korean War.

After the war, he was employed by New England Telephone and Telegraph (later known as Verizon), and remained with them until his retirement. He married his lifetime love, Helen (Tulla) Mitchell, in 1959 and they settled first in York, ME and Dover, NH and finally set up home with their three children in Durham. Edwin enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, and a Miller Lite to end his day. His handle when talking on his CB radio was "Easy Ed", again perfectly describing his demeanor. Edwin and Helen lived their retirement years in Barefoot Bay, FL. After Helen's passing, Edwin moved to Rochester live the remainder of his life. Edwin was a past Master in the Moses Paul Lodge #96 in Dover, a member of Shrine Bektash Temple in NH, VFW 4425 in Barefoot Bay, FL, Telephone Pioneers, and the Elks Club.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Helen, and his brother, Dana Mitchell.

Surviving are his sister, Nancy Mitchell of Randolph, MA, his sister-in-law, Gail Mitchell of Portsmouth, NH, his daughters, Sharon Mitchell of Rochester, NH, Susan Cusack of Barrington, NH, and Anne Huckins and her husband Matthew Huckins of Strafford NH, five grandchildren Katheryn Huckins, Thomas Cusack, Sarah Cusack, Matthew Cusack and Nathaniel Huckins and many nieces and nephews.
