Elderly man rescued after spending two nights in deep Maine woods

FORT KENT, Maine - An 81-year-old Fort Kent man, who was last seen on Sunday morning at his home, was located alive Tuesday afternoon and transported to a local hospital.
Three game wardens located Stanley Flagg deep in woods, where he was found shoeless, dehydrated and disoriented in the Spaulding Brook drainage in Fort Kent over a mile from his home on Franklin School Road. He was found in an area surrounded by dense alders and softwoods, some three-quarters of a mile from his tractor, which he appeared to have abandoned before getting lost.
Game Warden K9 Gordon and Warden Preston Pomerleau, with Game Wardens James Gushee and Brandon Sperry were searching the brook area after a Maine Search and Rescue Dog volunteer searcher and their canine located a slipper that was later confirmed to belong to Flagg. The three wardens were searching the area, when Gushee thought he had heard a voice, then he saw a man stand up. Gushee called out "Stanley!" and rushed toward him, where he found Stanley, who had sat down on a fallen log.
Game Wardens provided Flagg with Gatorade and water, and he was then examined by emergency medical personnel. Flagg was talkative, but was unsure how he got there, or how long he had been out in the woods. He was carried out by a team of game wardens and volunteers to a waiting ambulance, then transported to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent.
Fifteen game wardens, including three Maine Warden Service K9 units, and one Warden Service airplane were leading the search for Flagg. Nearly 30 volunteers, including two canine units from Maine Search and Rescue Dogs, assisted in the search. University of Maine- Fort Kent Search and Rescue, Maine Forest Service, Fort Kent Police and the Fort Kent Fire Department also assisted.
