ROCHESTER - Ellis Junior Lindsey (SMSGT USAF retired) of Lyons St., Rochester passed peacefully at Frisbie Memorial Hospital on Saturday, May 26, 2018, the result of a traumatic brain injury. Born on October 19, 1927 in Faxon, Tenn. the son of Ellis and Hallie (Wheatly) Lindsey, Ellis was one of 16 children.
He was predeceased by his wife Mary (Amelchuck) Lindsey and is proudly survived by his daughters Mary-Ellen Lindsey Breton of Strafford, N.H. and Elise Lindsey of Oak Hill, Va.; their spouses Rich Breton and Michael Loftus; three grandsons, Aaron Breton, Ross Breton and Carson Loftus and granddaughter, Riley Loftus. Additional survivors include many family members in Faxon, Paris and Camden, Tenn. including his dear sister Wilma Lindsey.
Ellis enlisted in the Army Air Force at the age of 17 in 1944 and served his country for 28 years and was a WWII Veteran. He met Mary while stationed in Rome, N.Y. they married in 1955 and later completed the family with two daughters. His family enjoyed the travel of military life, forming many new friendships along the way.
Upon his Air Force retirement from the FMS 509th squadron at Pease AFB, in 1972, he ran the Sportmans Club at Pease, the Sunday morning skeet shooting tournaments and acted as a Game Warden at Pease. Ellis then joined the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as shipfitter, where he added more names to his wide circle of friends. He was a member of the Frank E. Booma Post of the American Legion.
Ellis was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing with many of his friends through the years. If there was any extra money (and sometimes even if there was not) a new fishing pole or reel would somehow end up in his truck. Through his love of outdoors, his daughters were encouraged to know how to safely handle a firearm and helped their Dad with his shotgun shell reloading projects.
Hunting trips to Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Maine and fishing trips to Labrador were just a few of his many adventures. During a few of these adventures his wife Mary would conspire to do "surprise" home projects during his absence and he would come home to a new garage door, removed hedges or a deck. It became a running family joke as to what he might find when he arrived back home from his adventures. The three women in the household always kept him on his toes.
Ellis was able to travel back to his hometown of Faxon, Tenn. in 2014 where a grand family reunion was held with many generations of extended Lindsey family members that he had not seen in many, many years. "Uncle Junior" enjoyed once again his favorite "whisker" fish many times on the trip.
His daughters want to give their heartfelt thanks to his Lyons St. neighborhood family who embraced Ellis and helped to keep an eye on his shenanigans including leading the Lyons St. Pyrotechnic Team every July 4. He loved seeing his neighbors and their children and always had an ice cream for the young ones and the fridge stocked with beer for the older ones. Thank you also to his dear friends at the Dunkin Donuts shops across Rochester where you could measure what time of day it was by when he stopped by.
Mary-Ellen and Elise would also like to thank the nurses, doctors and support staff at FMH who made his last journey a peaceful and loving one with their excellent care.
There will be no calling hours and the family will have a private military burial. Mary-Ellen and Elise request that any donations in their father's name be sent to Cornerstone VNA 178 Farmington Road Rochester, NH 03867.
