ROCHESTER - Police and prosecutors remain tight-lipped regarding a city woman's fatal shooting around midnight June 5.

Billy Jo Ahearn died from a single gunshot wound in the early morning hours the following day, but Senior Assistant Attorney General Peter Hinckley said today he couldn't comment regarding where she was shot.

The 24-year-old had a Celebration of Life 10 days ago in Raymond at the VFW there, but little is known about how long she lived in Rochester and whom she may have befriended while living here.

Hinckley also said he couldn't comment on whether police had found the gun used in the shooting, the number of interviews conducted in the case or whether they had any suspects or persons of interest.

Asked if detectives were making progress in the case, he replied only, "It's an open investigation."
In the days following the shooting, divers combed the Cocheco River behind the courthouse and detectives searched a house on Lafayette Street reportedly in an attempt to find the weapon used.

Workers at Friendly's restaurant said they saw police searching the nearby grounds there with flashlights in the early morning hours following the incident, which first unfolded as officers responded to the area around midnight for a reported shooting that involved two groups of people.

Upon arrival, officers discovered three adults, including Ahearn who had sustained a gunshot wound.

The incident is still under investigation. Anyone who may have information regarding the incident is asked to contact Detective Geoff Moore at the Rochester Police Department at (603) 330-7140.
