Female passenger dies in crash into utility pole

ROCHESTER - The female passenger in a car driven by an elderly Rochester man died at the scene of a crash on North Main Street Tuesday.

Police say the driver, Henry T. Rapson, 70, was driving southbound in a 2007 Hyundai Elantra around 1:20 p.m. in the area of 306 North Main St. when he veered off the southbound shoulder and struck a utility pole.

The adult female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name and hometown were being withheld pending notification to family members.

Rapson was transported to Frisbie Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Strafford County Regional Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

One of the two southbound travels lanes remained closed for an extended period of time during the investigation.

The accident remains under investigation.
