First test of summer heat to hit Rochester area today

Get ready for a third of a heat wave.

Meteorologically, the phenomenon is not declared unless it run three days straight, but today's triple threat of heat, humidity and the potential for unhealthy air should have everyone's attention.

The National Weather Service has posted a heat advisory for the Greater Rochester area that runs from noon till 7 p.m.

With the dew points in the upper 60s the heat index values - or real feel temps - could run as high as 101 degrees.

Safety officials urge everyone to drink plenty of fluids and stay in an air-conditioned room and out of the sun.

They also urge relatives and neighbors to check on older adults who live alone to make sure they are able to stay cool.

Studies have shown the elderly do not recognize they are getting dehydrated or overheated as easily as younger folk.

Temperatures throughout the Northern Seacoast are expected to reach into the 90s around 1 p.m. with a high locally of 93 around 2 p.m.

Late afternoon thunderstorms - some severe - are predicted.

Local safety officials were not immediately available for comment.
