ROCHESTER - George W. Lewis Jr., 78, died at his home on Friday, June 29, 2018. George was born in Beloit, Wisconsin on September 18, 1939, the son of the late George W. Lewis Sr. and Harriet (Smith) Lewis.
George graduated high school in Sanford, Maine in 1959 and served in both the Marines and the Navy, where he served on the USS Independence CVA/CV-62 and the USS Valcour AVP-55. He retired from SUBMEPP in 1995 with 32 years of government service. He was a member of the Masons Strafford Lodge in Dover and the American Legion Post 7 in Rochester. George enjoyed driving his 1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS to local car cruise-ins and car shows. He attended both the Maine and N.H. Highland Games for many years. He spent years doing his family genealogy and was an avid reader.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Caroline (Otis) Lewis of Rochester; son Michael V. Lewis; granddaughter Brooke Elizabeth and her mother Nicole of Portsmouth; stepson Steven Burns of Wesley, Mass.; grandchildren Maelyn Emerson of Rochester, AFC Steven Burns stationed in Florida, and Laura Burns of Woonsocket, R.I.; stepson Chad Burns of South Portland, Maine; grandchildren Kaylee Burns and Jaden Burns of Saco, Maine; brother Michael T. Lewis (wife Judith) of Brookfield, sister Kathleen Woodman (husband Stephen) of Lebanon, Maine; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his brother John Lewis in 2014.
