CONCORD, N.H. - Gov. Maggie Hassan confirmed earlier this week that she had received a petition to keep the mother of Eve Tarmey behind bars while she awaits trial in the fentanyl-induced death of her daughter, but that the state would not be getting involved with the judicial system regarding bail orders.
A Strafford County Superior Court judge ruled Dec 16 that Jazzmyn Rood, 41, could be released from jail on personal recognizance as soon as Strafford County Community Corrections agreed she was competent to be freed. She had previously been held on high cash bail.
The online petition to keep Rood behind bars had garnered more than 1,800 signatures as of this morning.
Tracy Marshall of Rochester used the online petition platform change.org to launch the effort.
Eve Tarmey |
In the online preface to requests for signatures, Marshall puts the lion's share of blame in 17-year-old Eve Tarmey's death with Rood, who is charged with misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child, felony conspiracy to commit possession of a controlled drug and felony reckless conduct placing another in danger.
The headline of her petition reads, "Keep this MONSTER behind Bars!"
In another post a woman who identifies herself as the stepmother of Rood's two other minor daughters, says, "She has two other minor living daughters (sic) who are in possible danger if she is out. In the last 6 months Jazz has allowed and watched Mark inject heroin in front of her 14 yr old daughter, well this is the same age Eve was exposed, what next? Do I need to be afraid of losing my stepdaughters as well? Jazz has made a statement to the police that she knew Eve was doing heroin the last 2 yrs, and knew Mark was giving it to her and knew while she was in the bathroom Mark was giving Eve heroin."
Rood's release would be conditional to wearing a GPS monitoring device, random drug and alcohol testing and no-contact orders with Eve Tarmey's father, as well as co-defendants in the case Mark Ross and Leslie Aberle.
Ross, of 479 Gonic Road, The Riviera Motel, Room 117 where Tarmey died Oct. 17; and Aberle, 31, of Salisbury, Mass., remain in jail on $50,000 and $25,000 cash bail, respectively. They are charged with felony conspiracy to commit possession of a controlled drug, felony tampering with witnesses and informants and dispensing controlled drug, death resulting, which could mean life in prison
Rood has not yet been released from jail, Strafford County House of Corrections personnel said today.
