Gully Oven open house and walkabout set for Saturday

LEBANON - The Lebanon Conservation Commission will hold an open house at Gully Oven on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The event will include a short walk around the geological curiosity, which is known for its colorful history and amazing acoustics.

Last year the park was named the Gully Oven Natural Area and dedicated to two Lebanon women, sisters Marjorie Blood and Bea Lord, who both died in 2013.

The site was first popularized by 19th-century Norwegian violinist Ole Bull, who owned a summer home in West Lebanon and often gave free concerts here for locals.

As part of last year's ceremony the area was improved with steps, a roadside stone marker and kiosk.

Saturday's event is part of Take to the Woods October, a series of woodsy events held throughout the month in southern Maine.

Gully Oven is located on Gully Oven Road about a half mile north of Shapleigh Road.
