SANFORD - Southern Maine Garden Club held its recent annual Garden Party and Membership Drive as well as the hotly contended garden hat contest at the Wormwood Conference Center in Sanford.
Before the festivities began, a number of club members took a stroll down to Lake Bauneg Beg to enjoy the start of the sunset. After dinner club members voted for the Funniest, Prettiest, and Most Creative garden hats. Prizes were awarded to Lillian Lamb, for Funniest Hat, whose hat was decorated with both flat and curly parsley (note-it was so hot, she had to keep her hat in the fridge so it wouldn't wilt); Nancy Wyman, whose hat was a swirl of tulle, butterflies and fairy lights; and Donna Fields whose little black hat was embellished with white and silver flowers and a watering can.

SMGC meets throughout the year at the Springvale Library on the third Wednesday of every month beginning at 6:45 PM (unless otherwise noted). The public is invited to attend to sample our meetings to see if you would like to join us. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at the Library and the presenter will be Barbara Longstaff, GCFM Horticulture Chair and she is a member of the BeeGAP Speakers Bureau. She will talk on Mason bees in particular and pollinators in general. For more info contact in ME - Mary Stewart-Dore at 207-490-1833 or in NH - Donna Claveau at 603-332-4860.
