Head-on collision on Mother's Day claims lives of elderly couple

SANFORD, Maine -- An elderly Alfred couple died in a head-on collision in Sanford on Mother's Day.

The accident occurred around 8:55 a.m. in the area of 1811 Main St.

Arthur Karcher, 86, and his wife, Catherine, 85, were traveling south on Main Street in a 2024 Chevy Malibu when the vehicle drifted into the northbound lane and struck a 2019 Toyota Highlander operated by a 32-year-old female from Lyman.

All three individuals were transported to the hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries. Arthur and Catherine later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
