High winds knock down trees, power lines, even a tractor trailer hauling bananas

ROCHESTER - A winter wind storm buffeted the region Monday afternoon and night, toppling trees and felling branches, but reported power outages have been largely restored with just a handful of area households still in the dark.

As the storm got under way late in the afternoon, street lights on Milton Road swayed in blustery gusts, which topped out around 50 mph overnight.

Downed trees blocked portions of Old Dover Road in Rochester and Little River Road in Lebanon, Maine, while in Wells, Maine, a truck from Pennsylvania carry bananas overturned reportedly due to heavy wind reported by the driver.

Maine State Police say crash occurred in the northbound lane of Interstate 95 and caused traffic backups for seven hours until the wreck was removed about 11 a.m.

The driver was 42 year old Robert Malloy from Pennsylvania who told troopers high winds caused him to swerve and the truck overturned. The truck, which was destroyed, was owned by NAK Express, also from Pennsylvania.

Malloy escaped injury and was cited by troopers for a log book violation.

At the height of the storm, some 2,500 York (Maine) County households were without power, CMP reported.

Eversource said today seven households in Rochester were still without power, while less than a handful remained in the dark in Milton.
