ROCHESTER - Kyle Redfearn said when he saw a man working on siding fall from the peak of the roof of a Pickering Road home on Tuesday all he could think was, "Oh my God, he's going to hit the sidewalk."

The man who fell was working on siding at 29 Pickering Road, Redfearn said, and fell two and a half stories to the hard pavement.

He was airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland with significant injuries.

Redfearn, who lives in the neighborhood and was headed toward Dover, said he slammed on his brakes and pulled over to help.

"He was coughing up blood and bleeding from the head," he said. "I knew he was hurt pretty bad."

He said the worker, whose first name is Juan, was going in and out of consciousness as his colleagues at the worksite tried to render aid..

When Redfearn first pulled over he saw one of the victim's workmates trying to contact first responders, who were asking him COVID-related questions, he said.

"So I just drove to the Gonic Station and pounded on the stationhouse doors," he said. "Someone came out and I said, 'I need help now,' and they were out the door."

Redfearn knows what it's like to do a dangerous job; he works for a tree service company.

"When I saw him fall it was like freeze frame," he said. "The ladder broke right above the middle, And when he fell he held onto the top of the ladder, he was in sort of fetal position and fell on his side, hitting his head on the pavement."

No more information about the worker's condition was available as no last name has been released and privacy laws require a full name to get a condition.

Rochester Fire did not return a phone call regarding the incident.
