If you are from Rochester and surrounding towns and believe certain books currently shelved at the Rochester Public Library are inappropriate for our children please email us at The Rochester Voice. therochestervoice@aol.com. About three weeks ago we spoke with 11 parents waiting in their cars outside Rochester Middle School to pick up their child. Every single one of them, including one who said she was bisexual as a child, were horrified at the images in 'Gender Queer: A Memoir' like the one here.
By definition, If a community defines something as obscene, it IS obscene. Also keep in mind, any child of ANY age can view and check the book out, according to the library's chief librarian. "We have no right to do that," she said. "That is up to the parent or guardian."
What we've found profoundly disturbing about the reporting on this is that most newspapers and TV stations fail to display the lurid images. The question is WHY?
Is it because they don't want to offend someone's sensibilities, or they don't want the public to even pay attention to the story.
Perhaps you should ask them?
