DOVER - Janice Gardner, 79, of Dover Point Road, died on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. Born in Berlin, N.H., on July 28, 1938 to the late Clair and Eugene LaPlante, she was the eldest of four children. A life-long resident of New Hampshire, she traveled the world, visiting every continent but Antarctica, and with a special interest in the British Isles.
Jan was a long-time board member of the American Kennel Club and judged a number of breeds across several groups. She bred, raised and showed Dachshunds, finishing many champions and matching others with great care as family pets.
Gardner was a teacher, entrepreneur and writer, publishing numerous newspaper columns, magazine articles and books. She was active in animal rights and politics, first as a lobbyist and later serving her community as a NH State Representative from 2012-2016. She published a weekly column on pets in the former Foster's Sunday Citizen for many years.
She will be sorely missed by her only child, Sharon Mullen, son-in-law Michael Kennedy and grandchild, Ryan Mullen Kennedy; her siblings Betty and Bill Anderson, John and Lynne LaPlante, and Peter and Mary LaPlante; and numerous relatives and friends.
