DOVER - Joan Mabel (Hayes) Cheney died at home in Dover on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, with her family close by. She was born March 1, 1938, at home in Lebanon, Maine. She was the daughter of John H. Hayes and Beatrice (White) Hayes.

She graduated from Spaulding High School, class of 1955. Joan worked for Public Service of New Hampshire and Tri State Gas / Eastern Propane of New Hampshire. She was a beautiful pianist who often played in her grandfather's ''Victor White Band." She married Robert Arthur Cheney Sept. 7, 1957, they would celebrate over 60 years together. They had a son, Robert Arthur Cheney Jr.. Her greatest joy was being a wife, mother and grandmother to her family.

Joan was predeceased by her parents John and Beatrice Hayes, her husband Robert A. Cheney and her son Robert A. Cheney Jr. Joan is survived by her two grandsons, Johnathan R. Cheney of Dover and Dylan R. Cheney of South Berwick, Maine, her brother John Hayes and his wife Ann of York, Maine, her two sisters Janet Shorey and her husband Richard of Lebanon, Maine, Judy McMullen and her husband Patrick of Barrington. As well as many nieces and nephews in her extended family.

Joan's family would like to thank WDH Seacoast Cancer Center of Dover, New Hampshire for their excellent care, compassion and kindness during her illness.
