ROCHESTER - Just two weeks before an annual 5K road race honoring the memory of slain war correspondent James W. Foley, the death of a Washington Post columnist alleged to have been killed by a Saudi Arabia hit squad in Turkey is shining a renewed light on the dangers journalists face.

The 4th Annual James Foley Freedom Run/Walk 5K will be held on Saturday at the Rochester Community Center on Wakefield Street.

Diane Foley, the mother of Foley who lives in Rochester, has been a tireless advocate for protections for journalists after her son was killed by Isis militants during a public and videotaped beheading in August of 2014.

The dangers journalists face resurfaced recently when Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, a veteran journalist often critical of Saudi Arabia, was allegedly killed in Turkey after walking into the Saudi consulate there to complete a divorce proceeding.

Some 1,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate on Saturday with many more participating online around the world.

Registration is at 8:30 a.m., with a race start at 10 a.m. The race begins and ends at the Community Center.

Money raised from the run goes to support the James W. Foley Foundation and its mission for the protection of journalists around the world.
