BROOKFIELD - There will be a discussion on and tasting of Heirloom and Historical Apples on Oct. 4 at the Brookfield Town House.
The event runs from 3-5 p.m. at the The Brookfield Town House, 265 Wentworth Road (Route 109), Brookfield.
The unique apple tasting is free and open to the public and will include a history of heritage apples and the stories behind these special fruits.
Jared Kane, of the Branch Hill Farm Preservation Orchard, will discuss the history, usage, and diversity of a dozen or so heirloom apple varieties grown in Carroll County.
Participants will have a chance to taste apples rarely found in grocery stores but commonly found decades and even centuries ago.
Jordan Fritz, District Manager, Carroll County Conservation District, will also participate in the event. He works closely with landowners and farmers, helping them receive grants for conservation projects, connecting them with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and educating people on more sustainable farming and forestry practices.
