The Great Race is coming to Hanson Street in Rochester on Saturday from noon-3:30 p.m.

The Great Race is an antique, vintage and collector car competitive controlled speed endurance 2,100 mile road rally on public highways.

More than 100 participants will be traveling over a nine-day period beginning June 21 in Ogunquit, Maine, and ending on June 29 in The Villages, Florida.

The oldest vehicle competing is a 1915 Hudson and a special treat is the original white “Leslie” auto driven by Tony Curtis in the movie “The Great Race.” This race has a $150,000 purse for the winners.

The Great Race has traveled all over the United States, but the stop in Rochester will be the first time in its 35 year history that the race has traveled and stopped in New Hampshire.

The opening ceremonies begin at noon with Catherine Tewell singing the National Anthem and a color guard provided by the Spaulding High School Junior ROTC. The racers will arrive at intervals on Hanson Street where they will enjoy lunch and entertainment by Just By Chance.

The public is invited to attend this free event, enjoy lunch downtown, enter a 50/50 raffle, listen to the entertainment, view the cars and meet the teams over a three-hour period.

Free parking is available in the Union Street, City Hall, Columbus Avenue or Congress Street Public Parking Lots. We remind people not to park in marked private parking lots as they may be towed at their own expense.

The Great Race Stop in Rochester is presented by Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce and Rochester Main Street and sponsored by Jetpack Comics, Spurling Insurance Services, Walmart, the City of Rochester, Cornerstone VNA, Federal Savings Bank, Hannaford’s, Laars Heating Systems Company and Profile Bank.
