BRADENTON, Fla. - Louis Edgar Bergeron died on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018 at the Tidewell Hospice in Palmetto, Fla. at the age of 83.
Born in Rochester, N.H. on March 22, 1934, the son of the late Lucien and Catherine (Johnson) Bergeron and was one of ten children. He was a longtime resident of Rochester and Moultonborough, where he was past president of Black Cat Island Association, before retiring to Bradenton.
Louis was educated at Holy Rosary Grammar School and Spaulding High School in Rochester and is a 1958 graduate from the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Louis began his professional career as marketing representative for Fireman's Fund Insurance Co., Hartford, Conn. He later became the president, treasurer and sole owner of Bergeron Insurance Agency, Inc. in Rochester. He was elected and served for ten years in the N.H. State Senate representing Senate District 6.

In July 1983, Louis was appointed by then Governor John H. Sununu as Commissioner of the New Hampshire Insurance Department where he served for two, five-year terms. During his tenure, he also served as secretary, vice chairman and chairman for the Northeastern Zone of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), including leadership roles on NAIC Committees and technical oversight committees. In 1993, Louis became the Executive Vice President for the N.E. Alliance of Independent Insurance Agents. He was a very active member of the Rochester community. He is past president of the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce and past president and director of the Rochester Kiwanis Club.

He served on the Board of Directors of Indian Head Bank and Trust Company, Rochester, and the Board of Directors of Fleet Bank, Boston, and the Board of Directors of Holy Rosary Credit Union. He was a former Trustee and past treasurer, Frisbie Memorial Hospital; former vice president, Conference of Insurance Regulators (COIL).

He is survived by his wife, Florrie (Callahan) Bergeron of Bradenton, a son, Louis E. (Lee) Bergeron, Jr. of Newtown, Conn., his wife, Laurie, and their children, Zachary and Adam; a daughter, Kristan (Bergeron) Schwab of Bradenton, her husband, George, and their children, Alexis and Connor; a sister, Ann Torr and brothers, George, Marc, Lin, Alan and Leo. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Joan Couture, and brothers, Richard and Guy.
